At our estate, we’ve always believed that true luxury lies in simplicity—in waking up to birdsong, in walking through orchards heavy with fruit, in sitting down to a meal that comes from the very land beneath our feet.

That’s why we’re so excited to share the next step in our journey: the creation of a food forest built on permaculture principles.

What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is more than a method of farming—it’s a philosophy of living in harmony with the earth. At its heart, it’s about designing landscapes that mimic the balance and resilience of natural ecosystems. Instead of forcing the land to produce, permaculture works with the rhythms of nature: planting in layers, recycling nutrients, capturing water, and creating abundance with minimal waste.

A permaculture food forest is like a natural woodland, but carefully designed to provide food, herbs, and resources year after year. It grows richer with time, needing less intervention, and offering more in return.

Building with Aranya Agricultural Alternatives

To bring this vision to life, we are working with Aranya Agricultural Alternatives, an environmental and developmental organisation founded in 1999 by Narsanna Koppula and his team in Zaheerabad, Telangana. Aranya has been a pioneer in promoting permaculture across India, empowering communities to regenerate their landscapes and live more sustainably.

Their expertise and guidance are helping us shape a food forest that is not only productive, but also regenerative—designed to enrich the soil, conserve water, and create abundance for generations.

Why Permaculture Speaks to Us

For us, permaculture is a natural extension of what we stand for: quiet luxury that is deeply sustainable.

Quiet luxury, to us, is about understated abundance—the comfort of knowing your produce is clean, organic, and grown right here; the elegance of landscapes that are both beautiful and purposeful; the richness of experiences that bring you closer to nature without sacrificing comfort.

When we imagine our food forest, we don’t see just trees and plants—we see families picking guavas with their children, neighbours sharing baskets of herbs, and long evening walks under fruit-laden canopies.

What It Will Look Like

Our forest will be layered like nature intended:

  • Tall mango and jackfruit trees providing shade and fruit.
  • Shrubs of lemon, pomegranate, and berries offering bursts of flavor.
  • Ground-level herbs and greens—fresh coriander, lemongrass, and leafy vegetables.
  • Roots like turmeric and ginger growing quietly beneath.
  • Climbers like passion fruit and gourds threading through it all.

Every layer will serve a purpose—feeding the soil, nourishing us, and keeping the ecosystem alive.

A Place to Belong

We see this food forest as more than an orchard. It will be a place to gather, to learn, and to slow down. Residents will be able to join harvest walks, attend workshops on permaculture, or simply wander the shaded trails for a moment of calm.

This is quiet luxury at its purest: a life where wellness, sustainability, and beauty flow seamlessly into one another.

The Legacy We’re Growing

A garden may last a season, but a food forest is a legacy. Each year it grows deeper roots, richer soil, and stronger bonds. For our community, this is our way of planting something that will outlive us—an inheritance of abundance, wellness, and connection.

About Aranya Agricultural Alternatives

Founded in 1999 by Narsanna Koppula and his team in Zaheerabad, Telangana, Aranya Agricultural Alternatives is one of India’s leading voices in permaculture. Over the past two decades, the organisation has worked across rural and urban landscapes to train farmers, communities, and institutions in regenerative agriculture.

From grassroots training programs to large-scale design of sustainable ecosystems, Aranya has been instrumental in spreading awareness of permaculture as a practical, scalable solution for food security, climate resilience, and ecological restoration. Their mission is simple yet profound: to inspire people to live in balance with the earth.

We are proud to be building our food forest in collaboration with Aranya, whose vision and expertise align seamlessly with our own.

For us, permaculture is not just about growing food. It’s about growing a way of life—rooted in care, community, and quiet luxury. To join our journey in create these food forests, you can follow us on our instagram: @aksharaananda
